On June 23, 2021, a group of stakeholders gathered in Martinsville, Indiana, to discuss the potential long-term impact of Covid-19 in the local community. Out of this conversation, a group of concerned citizens came together to create a replicable and sustainable model with action committees to address needs around short and long-term housing, mental health, and transportation.
The Better Communities Coalition’s serves as a convener of these various action committees. The BCC is affiliated with Stability First, a 501©3 non-profit organization based in Martinsville providing resources for those who feel lost and hopeless. Learn more about Stability First.

Our Stances
The Morgan County Board of Commissioners approved the Morgan County Mental Health Task Force’s request to oversee distribution of local opioid settlement funds in May.
In July, the task force conducted a community survey to help guide the allocation of local opioid settlement funds for 2025. The survey results, which have been shared with key stakeholders including the Board of Commissioners, BCC Steering Committee, task force membership, etc., are now publicly available. These findings will play a crucial role in determining priorities for funding and shaping the overall distribution strategy. Survey results are available for viewing here.
The task force established an ad hoc workgroup following the community survey. This group, tasked with developing grant application criteria and processes, reviewing and evaluating grant proposals, and making recommendations for fund allocation, had its first meeting in September. The full list of workgroup members is available here.
Please stay tuned for additional updates. For more information about the opioid settlement, please visit: https://www.in.gov/recovery/settlement/.
